Are You Tired??

Do you feel tired throughout the day? Are you having mood swings, depression, or irritability? Do you wake up with a dry mouth or sore throat? Have you been diagnosis with GERD, diabetes,  or high blood pressure? You may be one of the 30% to 50% of Americans that suffer from snoring which could be correlated to obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a disorder that causes you to stop breathing for short periods of time while sleeping. It is caused by a physical obstruction in your airway. These episodes usually last 10 seconds or longer and are followed by gasping or chocking for air which usually wakes you up in the middle of the night.

Thankfully there is help!! There are 2 main devices to help reduce snoring and help treat OSA. The first one is the Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD) and the other is a Tongue Retaining Mouthpiece (TRM).

MDA look very similar to sports guards worn by athletes. These devices help open your airway by moving your lower jaw and tongue forward allowing you to breathe normally.

TRM’s are a little different than the MADs. TRMs use suction and have a compartment around the tongue to prevent the tongue from collapsing into the throat area. This devise is used if the dentist is not able to move the jaw forward.

So if your significant other complains that you snore or you have any of the symptoms that were listed above then you might be a good candidate for Sleep Apnea testing. It’s always better to sleep knowing your breathing properly and adding years to your life!
